Duran Duran by Jonas Åkerlund

Duran Duran 'Girl Panic' by director Jonas Åkerlund. The real members of Duran Duran cameo as bellhops, waiters, chauffeurs and paparazzi. My favorite music video this year. Brilliant!

Cindy Crawford as bassist John Taylor
Helena Christensen as drummer Roger Taylor
Eva Herzigova as guitarist Nick Rhodes
Yasmin Le Bon as the anonymous guitarist
Naomi Campbell as lead singer Simon Le Bon

“I feel sorry for the '90s, because it was never able to be anything much more than the hangover to the party that was the '80s.” -- Simon LeBon

Midnight City by M83

Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
The night city grows
Look and see her eyes they glow

Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
Drinking in the lounge
Following the neon signs
Waiting for a roar
Looking at the mutating skyline
The city is my church
It wraps me in the sparkling twilight

Waiting in a car
Waiting for the right time

White Rabbit trip back to 1967

Jefferson Airplane playing live on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving slow
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the doormouse said;
"Feed YOUR HEAD...
Feed your head"

Atlantis Completes 135th Shuttle Mission

When Atlantis touched down July 21st at Cape Canaveral, the high-flying era of the space shuttles came down to earth as well. After 30 years, the shuttle program, which began on April 12, 1981 with Colombia, has ended with the 135th mission. Atlantis delivered the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module packed with supplies and spare parts to the International Space Station, and retrieved a failed pump unit and other items for the return trip. Atlantis went aloft 33 times, logging over 125 million miles. The last shuttle will become a museum exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center.

Portal: No Escape

“Portal: No Escape” is a beautiful live-action short film based on the game Portal starring Danielle Rayne as Chell. It was directed by Dan Trachtenberg, with visual effects by Jon Chesson and matte painting by Maxx Burman.

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to
continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too
expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will
pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of
the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater."
-- Frank Zappa

8 Hours in Brooklyn

Next Level Pictures presents “8 Hours in Brooklyn” featuring beautiful slow motion video shot with a Phantom Flex high speed camera in and around Brooklyn. Cinematographer Jonathan Bregel describes his concept for the video:

"Anyway, the idea behind this video was to document whatever sort of culture we could find within an 8 hour span with literally no pre-production. I have honestly seen too many slow-motion explosions, face slaps, and popping water balloons, that I thought capturing real culture, and real emotion would be a cool change of pace. My goal was to successfully pull of a few of these shots with a small crew in order to be able to pitch the Phantom Flex for a lot of the documentary work we shoot/produce. A big misconception is that you need a massive crew and massive lights in order to use this camera… false. However, you do need to know how to use natural daylight to your advantage along with having a kick-ass core crew to support you."

London Riots

LONDON -- As a riot exploded in north London this weekend, here's a sad truth, expressed by a Londoner when asked by a television reporter: Is rioting the correct way to express your discontent?

"Yes," said the young man. "You wouldn't be talking to me now if we didn't riot, would you?"

The TV reporter from Britain's ITV had no response. So the young man pressed his advantage. "Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you."

Eavesdropping from among the onlookers, I looked around. A dozen TV crews and newspaper reporters were interviewing the young men everywhere.

The truth is that discontent has been simmering among Britain's urban poor for years, and few have paid attention. One out of two children in Tottenham live in poverty.

Mahna Mahnam

"Mahna Mahna," originally titled "Mah-Na Mah-Na," was written by composer Piero Umiliani for an Italian documentary about life in Sweden, titled Svezia, Inferno e Paradiso (Sweden, Heaven and Hell). It is a nonsense song that achieved widespread fame as a classic Muppet sketch.

The most famous Muppet rendition of the song debuted on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1969, where it was performed by Mahna Mahna and his back-up singers, the Snowths. This version of the skit was restaged many times on a number of variety shows before being featured as the opening number in the premiere episode of The Muppet Show.

The number became popular enough that it was spoofed by the Muppets themselves in a sketch on Muppets Tonight, in which Kermit the Frog complained to his psychiatrist that the Snowths would appear every time he said the word "phenomena."

Lewis Black on Broadway

One problem is that humans, as a rule, tend to be terrible at seeing the bigger picture and how they fit within it. If that's what education is and that's 47th, what is education if it's 50th? What could they possibly be teaching? I think what they do is, they take the kids to school in Arkansas; they feed 'em Coco Puffs for three hours, then they open the door to the school, and let the kids run, and run, and run, and who ever hits the most trees gets an A. Oh look, Johnny poked his eye out! Honor roll! -- Lewis Black
