1. Tesla Motors and Nevada made it official on Thursday evening. The electric car company's highly sought battery "Gigafactory" and its projected 6,500 jobs are coming to the Reno area. Sandoval projects that the Tesla plant -- which aims to build automotive-grade lithium-ion batteries on a huge scale and bring down their cost -- will deliver a nearly $100 billion in economic impact to Nevada over the next 20 years.
2. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced a new, one million-square-foot site for the future SolarCity GigaFactory facility, which will manufacture solar panels at the RiverBend site in South Buffalo. The Governor was in Buffalo today to officially break ground on the project, which will create more than 3,000 jobs in Western New York alone and a total of nearly 5,000 jobs in the state. The SolarCity facility will be the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, with more than 1 gigawatt of annual solar capacity when it reaches full production.
3. NASA selected aerospace giant Boeing and Elon Musk’s SpaceX Corporation as the two winners of a hotly contested $6.8bn contract announced on Tuesday as part of its Commercial Crew Development program. It means Musk, who has invested a sizeable chunk of his estimated $9.5bn personal fortune in the development of space technology, will play a key role in returning manned spaceflight to US soil for the first time since the retirement of the space shuttle fleet in July 2011.
4. The Dragon cargo ship built by SpaceX arrived at the International Space Station to deliver more than 2 tons of astronaut supplies and experiments for NASA, including the first 3D printer in space and an intrepid crew of 20 lab mice. European astronaut Alexander Gerst used the space station's huge robotic arm to grab the capsule with help from NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman.
5. SpaceX successfully launched the AsiaSat 6 satellite to geosynchronous transfer orbit. This marks the twelfth successful flight in a row for Falcon 9, and the second of two successful missions for AsiaSat this summer.

Humphrey and Betty
Born Betty Joan Perske in New York, Lauren Bacall initially worked as an usherette and a Vogue model before moving to Hollywood at the age of 19. Director Howard Hawks paid her $125 a week for what would prove to be her breakthrough role in the 1944 thriller To Have and Have Not. “You know how to whistle, don’t you?” she purred at co-star Humphrey Bogart. “You just put your lips together and blow.”
Bogart, she would later claim, was the love of her life. The pair married the following year and went on to cement their creative partnership on The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and Key Largo, a run of successful pictures that made them the glamorous first couple of the American film noir.

The Decipher Volumes by Neurotech
Slovenia's Neurotech, AKA multi-instrumentalist and composer Wulf, is a music connoisseurs dream. Since the release of 2008's 'Transhuman' EP, Neurotech's brand of cybermetal has grown to a dizzyingly high standard.
"I started with Neurotech in 2007 with an intention to write music by myself. I was a drummer in metal bands for many years prior to Neurotech and wanted to do more electronicly driven music. Having bands and after years of experimenting of making mainly trance music in a cracked version of Fl Studio." – Wulf interview with Intravenous UK

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
The Onion's movie critic Peter K. Rosenthal reviews 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' in this week's Film Standard.
"I was reading an interview with one of the producers on the new Transformers movie, and the thing that really got to me is that both the person asking the question and the person answering it thought they were communicating information. This has gotten more common, or I’ve gotten better at noticing it. Most public communication now sounds like the Teletubbies to me." – Tycho from Penny Arcade

Markus: this is why we use the buddy system
"That I was certain of something which I had often doubted -- there were still noble beings amongst us in whose hearts lived unshakeable knowledge of a lofty ordered life. And since a high example leads us in its train, I took an oath before this head that from that day forth I would rather fall with the free man than go in triumph among the slaves." – On The Marble Cliffs by Ernst Jünger (1939)

Happy Independence Day
“There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution.” ― Aldous Huxley
"If you love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." ― Samuel Adams
"The only thing that we can learn from history is that nobody ever learns from history." ― doktorjeep

Game of Thrones VFX Season 3
Five-time Emmy nominated VFX Supervisor Doug Campbell and three-time Emmy nominated Supervising Producer, Luke Groves led Spin’s team to deliver over 200 shots for the season, including Mance Rayder’s Camp, the Direwolves compositing sequences in the Northern Forest, CG crows, the 3D Unsullied Army, the Twins matte painting and The Wall 3D environment.
Jon Snow, Ygritte and the Wildlings climb the Wall, triggering a devastating ice slide. Comprised of over 80 shots, Spin created a 700′ ft wall, a couple miles in length (real world scale) that would hold up from any distance and any angle. Spin then simulated the entire ice slide event, shooting it from all cameras set up in the sequence that created a sense of scale and continuity over the sequence, playing out the action in real time.

We'll Always Be Freaks by Alan Ball
Ball has written two films, American Beauty (1999) and Towelhead (2007), the latter of which he also produced and directed. He is also the creator, writer and executive producer of the HBO drama series Six Feet Under and True Blood.
On True Blood: "I love all the characters deeply, but the most fun for me to write are Jason, Lafayette and Russell Edgington," he said. "They each have such a distinctive voice."
"I really enjoyed Bill because he's always struggled with being what he is," Ball continued. "I've really enjoyed Jason because I think he has really struggled to find meaning in his life over these last couple of seasons, and he's really hit a wall with being the 'hot guy,' and that's not really doing anything for him. I've enjoyed Pam and how earlier she was mostly comic relief but now she's developed her own story with her own emotional landscape. And I think that's really interesting, because she's such a guarded character."

Bill and Hillary 1975
Don’t wait for the good woman. She doesn’t exist. There are women who can make you feel more with their bodies and their souls but these are the exact women who will turn the knife into you right in front of the crowd. Of course, I expect this, but the knife still cuts. The female loves to play man against man, and if she is in a position to do it there is not one who will resist. The male, for all his bravado and exploration, is the loyal one, the one who generally feels love. The female is skilled at betrayal and torture and damnation. Never envy a man his lady. Behind it all lies a living hell. -- Charles Bukowski

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
A friend recommended Tolle's book, and I found myself completely absorbed in it from beginning to end. Tolle himself would probably agree that there is nothing essentially "new" about the ideas in the book; the value lies in the clear, intelligent and gentle way in which they are presented.
This book is carefully, thoughtfully, and beautifully written. He starts by illuminating the slippery and destructive patterns of the ego which confound spiritual and even physical well-being. Meditation and self-awareness are then shown to be practical techniques for breaking down and dissolving the various forms of mental pollution.

The Only by Static-X
Adapt and overcome. You ask why. Don't apologize. That is a legitimate question. This is your answer. Civilization requires gangs with vision who are on a path. Your choice is to learn, understand, and follow that path. That, or choose the iconography of the enslaved until all your delicious nectar is gone.
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man." — George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman (1903)
