DNA by Empire Of The Sun

Oh, in the meadow where we'd lie
Back in spring of '79
There were no rules to feel sublime
Let's trek down the path

We just slept to the radio
Gentle as my heart beats now
Turn up the fuse all over again, my friend

Just to take me away

Be my, be my DNA
Don't wanna fade away
Rewind, there's no yesterday
It's our discovery
Dreamtime, it's a special place
Let's keep each other awake
Our hearts, now they beat the same

There is a thread that runs along
The seam of all the paths we've crossed
A colour wheel that spins around
Weaved all into one
The price of getting setting suns
We're running to the beat of the drum
We are the creatures raised in luxe, in luxe

Just to take me away

Be my, be my DNA
Don't wanna fade away
Rewind, there's no yesterday
It's our discovery
Dreamtime, it's a special place
Let's keep each other awake
Our hearts, now they beat the same

Take me away
So far away
No one will find us
On our own island
Just out of choice
The dreamer fought the battleship away
It's over the horizon

Voices inside of us are guiding us on
Guiding us on

Can't you hear us calling you?
Can't you hear us calling you?
Can't you hear us calling you?

Be my, be my DNA
Don't wanna fade away
Rewind, there's no yesterday
It's our discovery
Dreamtime, it's a special place
Let's keep each other awake
Our hearts, now they beat the same

The Big Sleep is a 1946 film noir directed by Howard Hawks, the first film version of Raymond Chandler's 1939 novel of the same name. The movie stars Humphrey Bogart as detective Philip Marlowe and Lauren Bacall as Vivian Rutledge in a story about the "process of a criminal investigation, not its results".

Uno, dos,
one, two, tres, quatro.

Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw.
Had two big horns and a wooly jaw.
Wooly bully, wooly bully.
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.

Hatty told Matty, "Let's don't take no chance.
Let's not be el-seven, come and learn to dance."
Wooly bully, wooly bully.
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.

Matty told Hatty, "That's the thing to do.
Get you someone really to pull the wool with you."

Oakland Shootings

In less than 24 hours over the weekend, 12 people were shot along Oakland streets -- three of them fatally, their deaths marking the city's 63rd, 64th and 65th homicides of the year.

As of Sunday evening, investigators had not identified a motive or a suspect in any of the shootings, and none appeared to be connected, police said.

The bloody spate of shootings began just after 11 p.m. Friday outside an East Oakland house where a birthday party was being held. Police say four men were shot in the 400 block of 105th Avenue in the Sobrante Park area.

The OxyContin Express

"To me, it's one of the most disturbing aspects of our culture... Second only to war. The idea that there are massive corporations profiting off of these people becoming zombies." -- Joe Rogan

In the U.S., more people are now abusing prescription drugs than heroin, cocaine and ecstasy combined. For "The OxyContin Express", Marianna Van Zeller and Darren Foster traveled to ground zero of the epidemic, South Florida, the "Colombia of prescription drugs."

Doctors in Florida prescribe Oxy at five times the national average. This flood of pills has had a devastating effect in Florida, where three times as many people are now overdosing from prescription medication than from illegal drugs.

"As in the '80s and '90s cocaine was a big thing, now prescriptions have just exploded," says Sgt. Richard Pisanti of the Broward County Sheriff's Office. "Pablo Escobar couldn't have had it so good," says Kentucky Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo, "It's basically 'come here, give us cash and we'll give you a prescription."

No Call of Duty for us from http://www.thepointmag.com/2010/essays/call-of-duty

“What I did was … just now … was essentially just play some interactive, videogame version of Debbie Does Dallas. Anatomically correct. The full nine. It was even sexy. But further fucking removed from real war than porn is from real sex. Which of course is why everyone loves it. It turned me on.”

“That was quite a segue.”

“This is the answer to your question: there is no ratio-of-fire problem today.”

"Set before you are the world’s sins, which you can bathe yourself in, like fine perfume. As bodies are torn. As flesh-and-blood soldiers die, searching for meaning, failing to find before them the visions they once gave themselves to. So they turn to contempt. At sixty dollars a unit. This is modern warfare. One big spectacle. A videogame more popular than Moses. But not to worry. As the Air Force tells us: It’s not science fiction … It’s what we do everyday. The images come to us, almost imperceptibly. They meet us in our bewilderment, coolly, sexily, as though their arrival were not of our own creation, our very own and very inhospitable imago humani, so we name them Fate, Destiny, Necessity. Images all, nearly divine, by whom we believe ourselves to have been seized, and with whom we seek intimacy. And we gaze upon them, ravished."

Dirty Dozen Brass Band

Started in 1972, the Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band was established by Danny Barker in New Orleans. The band achieved considerable local popularity, and few of the musicians: trumpeter Gregory Davis, sousaphonist Kirk Joseph, trombonist Charles Joseph, and saxophonist Kevin Harris continued to rehearse together thru 1977. They were joined by trumpter/singer Efrem Townes, Roger Lewis on saxophone, and drummers Benny Jones and Jenell Marshall.

The band initially called themselves the Original Sixth Ward Dirty Dozen, a name designed to show their strong connection to the Tremé neighborhood and the local social club scene. In 1980, Jerry Brock made the first professional recording of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, which was played constantly on WWOZ.

In 1986, the band recorded Mardi Gras at Montreux (Jazz Festival in Switzerland) on Rounder Records. The album and the band's touring successes attracted major label attention, and in 1987 the band signed a contract with Columbia. Their Columbia debut, 1987's Voodoo, featured guest appearances by Dr. John, Dizzy Gillespie, and Branford Marsalis.

TED: Lawrence Lessig on the Republic

There is a corruption at the heart of American politics, caused by the dependence of Congressional candidates on funding from the tiniest percentage of citizens. That's the argument at the core of this blistering talk by legal scholar Lawrence Lessig. With rapid-fire visuals, he shows how the funding process weakens the Republic in the most fundamental way, and issues a rallying bipartisan cry that will resonate with many in the U.S. and beyond.

Shout At The Devil

In the beginning
Good always overpowered the evils of all man's sins
But in time the nations grew weak
And our cities fell to slums while evil stood strong
In the dusts of hell
Lurked the blackest of hates
For he who you fear awaits you
Now
Many many lifetimes later
Lay destroyed
Beaten down
Only the corpses of rebels
Ashes of dreams and blood stained streets
It has been written
That those who have the youth have the future
So come now children of the beast
Be strong
And shout at the devil
– Mötley Crüe

By highlighting different wavelengths of light, scientists can track how material on the sun moves. Such movement, in turn, holds clues as to what causes these giant explosions.

Dead Space 3

Comment from Penny Arcade:

The argument from the game’s producer is genuinely funny to us, by itself, independent of any comical elaborations we might have appended. It is some authentically next-level shit. Microtransactions as a necessary feature, one people won’t play your game without? That’s some projection, kid. “What? I can only pay sixty dollars for this game?!?! I’M GOING BACK TO DRAGONVALE” is not a phrase often heard lobbed over the Gamestop counter.

"Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like "In the Air Tonight" and, uh, "Against All Odds". Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist." -- Patrick Bateman

"This… this isn’t the butthex?"

"No. It is another training program designed to teach you one thing: if you are not one of us LOLOZLZOLLOOL'ers, you are one of them fiat bernankerz. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unbuttplugged. It is not the game that changes, it is only yourself."

TSOP by MFSB

"TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" is a 1974 hit recording by MFSB (Mother, Father, Sister, Brother) featuring vocals by The Three Degrees. The track sold over one million copies, and peaked at number one on the US Billboard pop and R&B charts.

Assembled in 1972 by record producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, MFSB was the house band for Philadelphia International Records. Over 30 musicians at Sigma Sound Studios originated the signature smooth "Philly sound" that dominated the early 1970s.

Don Cornelius, the creator and host of Soul Train, refused to allow any references to the name of the TV series when the single was released, requiring Gamble and Huff to adopt the alternate title for the release. Cornelius would later admit that not allowing the single to be named "Soul Train" was a major mistake on his part.
