At MIT, Donald Sadoway has been working on a grid-size battery system that stores energy using a three-layer liquid-metal core. Critical for energy delivery to the grid all the time, day and night, even when the wind's not blowing and the sun's not shining.
“If we're going to get this country out of the current energy situation, we can't just conserve our way out. We can't just drill our way out. We can't bomb our way out. We're going to do it the old-fashioned, American way. We're going to invent our way out, working together.”

Google announced that Makani Power will become part of Google X – the secretive research and development arm of the search giant. The deal comes as Makani carries out the first fully autonomous flights of carbon-fiber robot kites bearing power-generating turbines. Google has not said how much it paid to acquire Makani, but it has invested $15 million in the company previously.
